For me realising we are real living people functioning within the world we live in, our intimidate reality, alone can be mind boggling. Now with all the technology we have in today world it gets even more complicated. We call this new kind of tech immersive technology. To begin to understand the effects of immersive technology we must first understand the various levels of interaction between reality and virtual reality.

  • Reality: The complete real, physical world we live in.
  • Augmented Reality: Virtual content augments the real world.
  • Augmented Virtuality: Real Content augments a virtual world.
  • Virtual Reality: A complete synthetic digitally created world.

When working with immersive technologies there are a few reoccurring terms that you will come across.

  • XR (Extended Reality): All real and virtual environments, the sliding scale between reality and simulation. This term is an umbrella term for all realities using computer generated content. The ‘X’ in XR is simply a variable that can stand for any letter.
  • VR (Virtual Reality): A completely synthetic experience.
  • AR (Augmented Reality): An overlay of computer generated content onto the real world.
  • MR (Mixed Reality): computer generated content and objects in the real world are able to interact with each other.
  • Immersive Experience Design: The process of designing things using immersive technologies.
